First breast augmentation surgery performed at OGH

Hyderabad: The Plastic Surgery department of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) has for the first time successfully performed a free ‘Augmentation Mammoplasty’, a cosmetic surgery to enlarge and enhance breasts, on an 18-year-old-girl from Nalgonda district.

The young daughter of a taxi driver from Nalgonda, from an underprivileged background, had approached the Plastic Surgery wing of OGH with an underdeveloped right breast. Such a unique cosmetic surgery, which is usually conducted in private sector, was never taken-up earlier at a government hospital.

Head, Plastic Surgery, Dr Palukuri Lakshmi, who led the team of surgeons, discussed with the Superintendent, OGH, Dr B Nagender for providing facilities needed to conduct the procedure. On Thursday, Dr Lakshmi while interacting with press persons said that the department will do its best to take-up similar cosmetic surgeries for women from middle-class and poor background.

“We provide burns and trauma reconstruction facilities to poor patients. However, there was also a need to offer cosmetic surgery facilities to patients who can’t afford such treatment at private healthcare facilities. Keeping this in mind, we decided to introduce this facility,” Dr Nagender said.

Post-surgery, the patient was discharged without any complications. The surgical teams included Dr.Raja Kiran Kumar Goud, Dr Aswin Kishore and PG medicos Dr .Asfiya , Dr. Faiyaz, Dr.Vijay Babu, Dr Ajay and Dr. Madhulika. The anaesthesia team comprised of Dr. Pandu Naik, Dr. Pavani and Dr. Anupama.
