Woman killed, villages inundated as floods hit life in Jammu

Jammu, Aug 17 (IANS) Incessant rains and floods killed a woman while seven people were rescued from a swollen river in Jammu region Saturday night.

Rashida Begum, 36, was buried alive in her house that collapsed during the night because of incessant rains in Rajouri district of Jammu region, police told IANS here.

"Seven labourers were trapped by the swollen Tawi river in Jammu city late last night. It took three hours for rescue teams of police and army to rescue these trapped persons.

"Floods have also damaged the border fencing in Samba district where flood waters entered several villages and a BSF camp. Flood protection bunds have been damaged at many places in the district. Flood waters have also entered agricultural fields destroying several hectares of crops".

Life has also been adversely affected by floods and incessant rains in Reasi, Poonch and Udhampur districts of Jammu region where authorities have asked people living in low lying areas and those close to flash flood prone streams and Nallahs to move to safer places.

Season’s first snowfall occurred during the night in higher reaches of Kishtwar district and at some places on the Mughal Road that connects the Rajouri district of Jammu region with the Valley.

Meanwhile, the MeT office said weather would start improving from Sunday afternoon.
