Woman breaks CA mosque windows

A woman shattered windows and draped bacon strips over the door handles of a California mosque as part of an alleged hate crime over the weekend.

The suspect, a woman 25 to 35 years old, vandalized the Islamic Center of Davis and placed the raw bacon over the exterior handles shortly before 4 am on January 22, according to the Davis Police Department.

"She broke almost every glass pane on the exterior. She had some type of object and walked around pressing it against the glass and shattering it," said Basim Elkarra, executive director of the Sacramento Valley chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV).

"Muslims don’t eat pork, so obviously this was an attempt to offend Muslims," he said.

Elkarra said the incident led to an outpouring of support from the local community and an online fundraising campaign that quickly surpassed its goal of raising $9,000 to repair the damage.

CAIR-SV also offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The suspect was described by cops as being medium height and about 160 to 180 pounds.

She has red or brown wavy hair and was caught on camera wearing beige high-top shoes, gray or blue tight-fitting pants, an off-white vest and a black hat with a unknown logo, the police said.
