Watch: ‘He wouldn’t have taken one like that in his life’ – Bangladesh fielder takes stunner to help script one of the great Test upsets

Watch: Shoriful Islam took a screamer at midwicket to help Bangladesh on their way to the greatest win in their Test history, over New Zealand at Mount Maunganui.

The result has been hailed as one of the biggest shocks cricket has ever seen, with Bangladesh, ranked ninth in the world, beating the World Test Champions in their own backyard.

For long stretches, it seemed as if a draw was the most likely outcome. Even late on the fourth evening, New Zealand were 136-2 and into the lead, before a burst left them five down overnight.

Still, Bangladesh needed an almighty effort to force a win on the final day, and surged through a complete performance in the field. The last wicket fell to a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch from Taijul Islam, but pride of place went to Shoriful. Ebadot Hossain, who had already claimed his maiden Test five-for, was given a sixth wicket as Kyle Jamieson aimed a flick into the leg-side. The airborne Shoriful claimed the catch in his right hand low to the ground, clinging on superbly to the firmly struck shot.

“When confidence levels are high you can do things like this, you can achieve the unachievable,” said the on-air commentator. “Shoriful, he’d have never taken a catch like this in his life.”

That left New Zealand seven down, and soon enough a seismic eight-wicket win was secured.
