With Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump announcing his running mate. On The opening day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, all eyes are on Senator JD Vance. For the Indian American community, the nomination opens up another area of interest – the possibility of having an Indian American second lady.

Republican Ohio Senator James David Vance is married to Indian-origin Usha Chilukuri — a practicing attorney, who worked as an associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP. SF Gate. But she resigned on until July 15 morning just minutes after Trump announced that he’d chosen her husband as his vice-presidential pick. Chilukuri confirmed the news of her resignation to SF Gate. She said, “In light of today’s news, I have resigned from my position at Munger, Tolles & Olson to focus on caring for our family. I am forever grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at Munger and for the excellent colleagues and friends I’ve worked with over the years.”

During her years with the firm, Usha dealt with complex civil litigation and appeals in a wide variety of sectors, including higher education, local government, entertainment, and technology. She worked with the law firm’s San Francisco and Washington, D.C. offices.

Usha and Vance both met at Yale University while pursuing college. They got married in 2014 and have three children – two boys and a girl.

Usha’s parents are immigrants from India who raised their kids in suburban San Diego. Usha attended Mt. Carmel High School. She moved to the East Coast for college and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University in 2007. In 2009, she got a philosophy degree as a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge. She then returned to Yale to pursue a law degree. While a student, she served as the executive development editor of the “Yale Law Journal” and as managing editor of the “Yale Journal of Law & Technology.”

She clerked at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. As per her Linkedin profile Usha also worked for then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who was confirmed to the Supreme Court in 2018. She has also clerked for Judge Amul Thapar at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky from 2013 to 2014 and also served as a clerk for Chief Justice John G. Roberts.

While this is the first time that the spotlight has been on Usha, during her husbands’ run for Ohio seat senate she did make appearances along with him.

Looks like we will be seeing more of her in the future.
