Ranchi, Sep 26 (IANS) Two elephants were killed after a train hit them on the outskirts of Ranchi on Monday, said an official.

"One elephant calf and an elephant cow that appeared to have got separated from their herd of 14 were killed in the accident," Ranchi’s District Forest Officer (DFO) Rajiv Bakshi told IANS.

The incident took place near Gautamdhara railway station which is about 30 km from here.

Bakshi said "a team has been sent to the scene of the accident and further details were awaited."

In Jharkhand, more than 30 elephants have died in train-related accidents.

Experts say that the railway tracks encroach upon the elephant corridors causing such accidents.
