Two Arrested for Maintaining Large Party, Indoor Soccer Game and Unlicensed Liquor Sale

NEWARK, NJ- Two people were arrested over the weekend in Newark and charged with maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment after police said they found a large party, soccer game and illegal alcohol sales inside a building.

Officers were called about 11:45 p.m. Saturday to the building on the 200 block of Verona Avenue on a report of executive order violations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to police.

“Responding police observed several people at the location, not wearing masks and drinking beers,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement.

“Officers also observed a full soccer game with separately uniformed players and spectators,” Ambrose said.

Police arrested Rosa Maintano, of Irvington, who they said was selling and serving beer from a concession stand without a license. Officers confiscated 720 Bud Light Lime beers and 272 Corona beers, Ambrose said.

Maintano, 23, was charged with maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment, illegal sale of liquor and unlawful possession of alcohol, the police director said.

Police were called to the building again about 7:40 p.m. on Sunday on another complaint that similar executive order violations were taking place, Ambrose said.

“Responding officers observed 150 to 200 adults and children, many not social distancing nor wearing masks, inside the establishment,” Ambrose said.

Fanny Camas, of Irvington, was arrested for allegedly serving beers from a concession stand for money without a license. Police confiscated 22 beers and $830 in proceeds that they claim were from illegal alcohol sales.

Camas, 27, is charged with maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment, illegal sale of liquor, and unlawful possession of alcohol.

“It’s incredible how once again people put wealth over health,” Ambrose said. “It’s selfish people like this who perpetuate the spread.”

Ambrose said both incidents are under investigation and that additional charges are possible.
