TVS Jupiter 125: All about practicality, comfort and style

Hyderabad: Although a little late to join the club of 125 cc commuter scooters, TVS makes a promising entry into the segment with an upgrade to the already popular Jupiter.

Big on its brand name the, all new Jupiter 125 has a lot riding on it and it does not disappoint. At an ex showroom price range of Rs 72,300 – 86,200 (across three variants), it scores big on practicality. After riding the scooter on the busy Hyderabad roads for about a week, I find that the Jupiter 125 is a really good evolution from the 110 cc Jupiter which is also available in the market currently.

Engine:

The heart of the scooter is where the big upgrade has taken place. The 124.8cc engine, as TVS claims, is not shared from the other two 125 cc engines – on the Ntorq and the Raider. Though the stroke and bore of the engine are the same, this unit comes with a 2-valve setup unlike the 3-valve setup on the other two 125cc engines.

The single-cylinder air-cooled engine churns out maximum power of 6 kW at 6500 rpm and torque of 10.5 Nm at 4,500 rpm, which make commuting in the smaller towns as well as big cities with traffic a breeze. Ecothrust Fuel injection (ETFi) technology, as TVS claim, offers better startability and refinement of the engine.

Design and looks

The two-wheeler manufacturers went bold with the usage of chrome bits on the scooter. Keeping in mind the risk of chrome bits being loud and glaring, the designers made use of it in the right amounts, at the right places. The set of black alloy wheels, also seen on the 110, will be the only similarity between the two siblings, as the new 125 is slightly bigger and curvier than its younger sibling.

The grab rail which comes integrated with a reflector, gives a premium feel to the scooter. The finish overall, including the plastics and the switches used, is also extremely fine.

Practicality and features

Jupiter 125 scores big on practicality. TVS has done an amazing job moving the fuel tank from under the seat to below the footboard with an inlet in the front. Not only does it mean that you don’t have to get off your scooter to get a fill, but also that you get a massive under-seat storage space which can accommodate two full-face helmets. The 31 litre storage space can easily be its unique selling point. Two hooks – one in the front and one below the seat – add to the practicality enabling riders to carry more stuff.

Jupiter 125 gets a part-digital-part-analogue instrument cluster across three variants, although some of the functions like the side-stand engine cut-off and auto start-stop become optional.

Ride and handling

Ride quality and comfort are addressed well. The longer, more comfortable seat makes the ride comfortable and has more-than-enough room to accommodate two full-grown adults comfortably.
The scooter comes with preload adjusted gas-charged single shock suspension on the rear, which could have been a lot softer considering the roads we have on offer. The seat however, makes up for the stiffness in the suspension to an extent.

The variant that I got to ride came equipped with a front disk brake the setup is quite impressive given the unstable nature of the smaller sized wheels used on scooters. Jupiter with good braking capabilities, is nimble in traffic and should be maneuverable even for beginners.
