Port-of-Spain (Trinidad), Feb 4 : Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath Wednesday said he has no intention of competing for the position of president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

Bassarath’s declaration was prompted by a tweet from former West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president Dinanath Ramnarine that the TTCB chief will be challenging Dave Cameron for the post, reports CMC. The WICB will hold its Annual General Meeting next month.

“That is utter rubbish. I don't know where this man gets his information but again he is wrong. I am not contesting the presidency of the WICB,” declared Bassarath.

Cameron has been under attack recently for his role in the WICB’s handling of the recent aborted tour of India which left the board with a debt of $41.9 million.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonzales has blamed Cameron for the circumstances surrounding the aborted tour and also led calls for him to step down.

Bassarath has insisted that he is not interested in the position of WICB president, and that the T&T Board will convene this week to formalise a position on the WICB’s election.

“The directors will all get their chance to voice an opinion. At the end of it, we will come up with a position and as usual we will stick to whatever that decision is,” he said.

Nominations for the post of WICB president close on Saturday and the elections will be held on March 7.
