Taapsee Pannu’s Opinion On Gender Pay Disparity In Bollywood Is Brutally Honest

When it comes to gender disparity in terms of wages, Bollywood definitely deserves a mention. It’s no secret that male actors are paid way more than female ones, thus Bollywood directors end up making movies focusing on the male characters. Truth be told, we are far from achieving the true goal of giving equal wages.
It’s a bitter pill to swallow and even after actresses like Deepika Padukone shedding light on it, it continues to be the norm. Just recently, reports of Kareena Kapoor Khan demanding a hike in fee for playing Sita spread like wildfire and people were quick to tag her as a ‘selfish’ actor, and even demonized her.
Taapsee Pannu recently shared her opinions on the pay disparity between male and female actors. She said that female actors who ask for more money are seen as ‘difficult’, while if a male actor hikes his fee, it is celebrated because he is climbing the ladders of success.
Speaking to The National Bulletin, Taapsee said, “If a female actor asks more, she is termed difficult and problematic and if a man asks more it’s a mark of his success. The difference is the men who started with me earn 3-5 times more than what I do. And the gap keeps increasing as we go in higher star category.”
She added that the audience doesn’t celebrate female actors as much as male actors. “Even now we struggle with budgets. Everyone hears that since it’s a female-driven film budget will have to be slashed and that’s because our returns are always unfair in comparison to our male counterparts. And the audience is a big reason behind that,” she said.
On the work front, Taapsee Pannu’s Haseen Dillruba is now streaming on Netflix.
In a statement, Taapsee had earlier said, “Haseen Dilruba was a film I had a very strong gut feeling about the day I heard the basic idea from Kanika. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the first choice for the film and it came to me after all their options were exhausted. The good old saying that, if it’s meant for you it will come to you stands true for this case. It’s not just a beautifully written mystery, it has such wonderful characters involved which is candy in an actor’s hands. I am glad I got to experiment with my look and performance with this one because I am definitely not the go-to person for this kind of character conventionally and we all love to take risks here.”
