Lucknow, Jan 24 : The Uttar Pradesh Police has stepped up security in the state on the eve of the release of controversial Bollywood film "Padmaavat".

Anand Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (law and order), in a missive to all district police chiefs has asked them to step up security around multiplexes, single screen theatres where the film is to be screened on Thursday.

He has also asked Local Intelligence Units (LIU) to be more vigilant and identify trouble makers. The police has also been asked to be strict with elements who try to disrupt the release of the film, which has been cleared for pan-Indian release by the Supreme Court.

There have been stray incidents of protests, vandalism and demonstrations against the release of the film in some parts of the state.
