JARRATT, VA – Boar’s Head is recalling several deli meats due to possible listeria contamination linked to a multi-state outbreak that resulted in two deaths and nearly three dozen illnesses. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of all liverwurst products and several types of deli meats after a sample tested positive for L. monocytogenes, which causes listeriosis.

The recall affects 207,528 pounds of products distributed nationwide. This follows a CDC report of multiple illnesses traced to meats sliced at deli counters. As of July 25, 34 people across 13 states, including Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, were affected, with 33 hospitalized and two deaths reported in New Jersey and Illinois. Samples from patients were collected between May 29 and July 12.

Health officials believe the true number of sick individuals might be higher, as some recover without medical care and are not tested. The outbreak is linked primarily to deli-sliced turkey and liverwurst. Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms. The infection mainly affects pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
