WASHINGTON, DC- On Monday, the walls of the White House echoed with tunes of –“Saare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Humara,” as Asian Americans gathered to celebrate the annual Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month at a reception with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The patriotic song most Indians who grew up in India, hummed during ceremonies, was played twice by the White House Marine Band when requested by the Indian American community that was invited by the president for the annual event.
The song was written by Mohammad Iqbal during India’s Independence struggle.
The month of May is marked as the Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) month and recognizes the part the communities have played in the shared history of America.
