Srinagar, Aug 18 (IANS) Over a month after a youth was allegedly killed by a police officer in Srinagar his mortal remains were exhumed on Thursday on the orders of the Supreme Court.

A team of doctors conducted a post mortem of Shabir Ahmad Mir whose body was exhumed in the presence of family members and a magistrate.

Mir was reportedly killed on July 10 in the Tengpora area of the city.

Police had claimed that Mir was killed in clashes between security forces and protesters. However, his father filed an application in a local court alleging that his son was killed in cold blood by a deputy superintendent of police.

The court directed the police to register an FIR under section 302 of the Criminal Procedure Code against the police officer.

The court subsequently held some top police officers of the city in contempt for failing to comply with its directions.

The state government had appealed in the Apex court against the orders.

After staying the contempt proceedings against the police officers, the top court ordered that the body be exhumed to ascertain the cause of death.
