Madrid, Aug 29: Spain defender Sergio Ramos on Monday expressed surprise over chief coach Julen Lopetegui's decision for not picking veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the national football squad.

"We were all are surprised when a player so emblematic and historic wasn't called up, he's our first captain," Ramos told media, reports Efe.

"This new era begins with a radical change and we have to look forward. I've talked with Iker a lot but you have to respect the decision of the coach," the Real Madrid defender added.

He further said that 35-year-old Casillas's position is difficult for any player, and he is aware that he will be subjected to the same circumstances in the future when he loses his starter position in the team.

However, the Real Madrid player added that Casillas has the support of all of his teammates because of his long and successful history.

Casillas, who now plays for Portuguese club Porto after leaving Real Madrid, captained Spain to World cup triumph in 2010 as well as to victories in 2008 and 2012 Euro Championships.
