On World Sight Day, Here Are 5 Indian Celebs Who Pledged To Donate Their Eyes

To be able to see the world is a gift, however disregarded, in its own right. Close to 6.2 crore people in India alone are unable to enjoy this gift to the fullest, with close to 80 lakh people having no vision at all (as per WHO data, 2020). For many who cannot see, a transplant is substantial hope.

Organ donation may have many fallacies surrounding it, but not only can one person improve but save the lives of others. Here is a list of celebrities who have pledged this gift upon their demise.

Priyanka Chopra

The cause, for the actress, is one close to the actress’ heart. “The strength and resilience that he has shown through his illness shows me how every moment is important and how valuable it to donate an organ,” she said, referring to her father in his last moments. “You all are here since you understand the cause, however, in my other talks I put it to people that it is a very personal experience,” she had said at a keynote address at the University of Rochester Medical Centre (URMC).

Irrfan Khan

Not only was Khan an unapparelled actor, but he was also adamant about giving back to the community. He had, for that reason, made himself the face of the ‘More to give’ campaign, highlighting the positive impact on the well-being of the nation that organ donation could lead to. “I would urge all fellow Indians to support the cause and pledge to donate their organs,” said he. He also stressed the importance of myths and inhibitions one may have to face before they become an organ donor.

Randeep Hooda

Randeep Hooda pledged to donate his eyes along with co-actress Kajal Aggarwal after the two starred in Do Lafzon Ki Kahani where the latter’s character is visually impaired.

However, late the Highway actor announced via Twitter that he had pledged the gift of his organs upon his demise in November 2016. Hooda did so at the 7th Organ Donation Day event organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) and urged others to follow suit.

Amitabh Bachchan

Bachchan had been vocal about his allegiance to organ donation and has, as per reports, already made sure that after he passes an NGO would see to it that his organs get a second life. He is also one to have honed this passion for a cause out of experience; Bachchan had met with a severe accident at the sets of Coolie post which he famously received 60 units of blood donated by around 200 fans and family. He had inspired the members of his family, like daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai, to do the same.

Aamir Khan and Wife Kiran Rao

This now separated couple had not only donated their organs, back in 2013, but also highlighted the importance of the same in the best way they knew — through film.

“If anyone has seen the film (‘Ship Of Theseus’), I hope they will definitely be convinced that it’s the most beautiful and most logical thing to do,” she said of the film which reportedly is the reason behind the then couple’s decision. Filmmaker Kiran Rao had disclosed to reporters at an organ donation camp that she has taken a pledge to donate her organs before she revealed that actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan, her then-husband, was also keen on doing the same. And later, in 2014, Khan announced that he has.

Many other actors — Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Iqbal Khan, R Madhavan, have promised their organs.
