Not VicKat, But Why This Wedding Was The Most Important ‘Shaadi’ Of 2021

As the year inches towards its end, we find ourselves retrospecting about all that has happened in 2021.

From fighting our way through covid to getting hit with a new variant, from witnessing several controversies to bidding goodbye to some of our most cherished celebrities, the year was full of moments that made quite a lasting impression.

As did a wedding that probably managed to create a very very special place in our hearts. And before any of you take a wild guess and think of Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif, let me stop you right there and say that they’re not it.

Even though the #VicKat wedding is being called the wedding of 2021, we have good reason to contest that title and give to a couple that was more than just showbiz and glamour.

We are talking about Supriyo Chakraborty (31) and Abhay Dang (34), the first gay couple in India to have gotten married in Telangana.

“Our journey to being accepted as gay men has not been too difficult.”

The wedding took place in a private yet beautiful ceremony in Hyderabad with close friends and family showering their love on the lovely couple.

Of course, same-sex marriages are still not recognised in Indian law, but the couple decided to make it official by putting a ring on it, anyway.

And with that, created history.

The wedding was officiated by Sophia David, a friend of the couple from Hyderabad, as well as someone from the LGBTQ+ community herself.

As the groom and groom walked down the aisle, hand in hand, dressed in their white tux, Telangana witnessed its very own first same-sex wedding.

The couple that had a mix of both Punjabi and Bengali wedding traditions said, “We celebrated it in an informal, yet intimate way without either of our religions or customs coming in the way.”

Supriyo also mentioned that, “Mehendi is always a woman-centric ceremony. We wanted to break that stereotype by holding the same for all men at the venue. During Haldi, we wore the Bengali topor (a headgear). Subsequently, a sangeet function was held wherein Kathak performances were given.”

Their wholesome wedding pictures have broken the internet as people are rejoicing at the sight of patriarchal customs being tarnished to make way for modern and new India.

This included the couple’s parents as well, who at first weren’t okay with the idea, but came around in due time and are now extremely happy for their children’s union.

Supriyo Chakraborty then said, “We hope to live in a world with no closets. The core value of a relationship is acceptance. We should not try to change the other person. I think a relationship stands on the firm grounds of mutual respect and that is something we would never compromise on.”
