Asoke Kumar Mukerji has been appointed as the new Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York.

Mukerji replaces Amb. Hardeep Puri, whose term has probably been the most action packed and historic for any PR in recent years. It was during Puri’s tenure that India was elected as a non- permanent member of the Security Council, which India also presided.

Handpicked by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid for one of the most important diplomatic assignments, Mukerji was hitherto a Special Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry. He has served as Consul General in Dubai and as Deputy High Commissioner in London. He was also private secretary to Salman Khurshid during the latter’s previous stint as a Minister of State.

Dnyaneshwar Mulay (pronounced Gyaneshwar) is the designated Indian Consul General in New York. He was hitherto the Indian High Commissioner in Maldives. The diplomat has also been widely recognized as a prominent thought leader, and author.

Mulay is a well-known writer having written over 15 books in Marathi that have been translated in Arabic, Urdu, Kannada and Hindi. He has won many awards including from the Hindi Sahitya Akademi of Delhi.

He is also the inspiration behind many socio-educational projects including Balodyan, an orphanage in his native village in Maharashtra and Dnyaneshwar Mulay Education Society in Pune, working with innovative concepts of global education.
