New Delhi, August 21

Tripura, the tiny north-eastern state, is set a to play a crucial part in Mamata Banerjee’s plan to assume the leadership role in the anti-BJP front proposed to be floated to take on the saffron party in the 2024 Lok Sabha General Elections.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by the West Bengal Chief Minister, is growing in Tripura at the expense of the once strong Congress.

On Saturday, Pijush Kanti Biswas, president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee, who announced to quit politics “for the time-being”, withdrew his resignation following the request of the party high command.

Congress Working Committee member and party’s Tripura in-charge Ajoy Kumar spoke to Biswas and requested him to withdraw his resignation letter. Kumar, after talking with Biswas, issued a statement, saying he would visit Tripura on August 29 and would discuss with him to sort out the party’s organisational matter.

Sushmita Dev, who resigned from the post of president of the All-India Mahila Congress and joined the TMC, told reporters at Silchar, her hometown, that she was in touch with Biswas and discussed various issues related to Tripura politics. Having defeated the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly elections held recently, Mamata has earned the distinction of being someone who can take on PM Narendra Modi. A good TMC show in Tripura in the 2023 elections will boost Mamata’s image as a politician who knows how to face Modi.
