LOS ANGELES , CA– The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is warning the public about a phone scam where scammers are posing as representatives of the LASD and using tactics of threats and intimidation to steal money from people.
According to the LASD, the scammers are calling people and falsely claiming that they have failed to respond to a jury summons or have an outstanding warrant. The scammers then demand payment in the form of gift cards, Bitcoin, or prepaid credit cards, threatening to arrest the individual if they do not comply immediately.
It is important to note that the LASD would never demand payment over the phone or through email. All financial transactions are conducted in-person at patrol stations, court houses, or custody facilities.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the LASD and demanding payment, the LASD advises hanging up immediately. If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, or have any information that could help with the investigation, the LASD asks that you call them at 800-222-8477.
