Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been great servants of Indian cricket for several years now. They have always played with the same goal of helping the Indian cricket team scale new heights but some people are always on the lookout for placing them at loggerheads and brewing stories of rift between them.

Cricket being a team sport, the contribution of each and every player is equally important but some people just don’t get it.

When Rohit smashed his first first overseas Test hundred on Day 3 of the fourth Test at the Oval, the joy on Kohli’s face should have shut all those people up who, for some reason, never miss any opportunity to make up stories about the rift between the two modern-day greats.

When Rohit charged down the track and cleared the long-on fence off Moeen Ali’s bowling to reach the three-figure mark, Kohli punched his fists and celebrated just like a small child does after getting a candy, while his other teammates and support staff were more subdued in their cheers.

In fact, Kohli’s celebration had more emotions than Rohit himself, who just raised his bat towards the crowd and the Indian dressing room and acknowledged their support. Normally, a batsman celebrates his fifty by raising his bat and hundred by removing his helmet, but Rohit, despite getting such a big monkey off his back, looked calm and composed as if scoring the hundred was no big deal.

One possible reason could be that Rohit has never played for milestones and landmarks, and scoring a hundred was not his priority. His focus was on playing more deliveries and spending more time in the middle and getting a hundred was the cherry on top.

“Hundreds don’t matter to me, runs are important but these milestones, if it has to happen then it will happen – the important thing is playing my role, opening for the first time in England in Tests and I am glad that I contributed to the team,” Rohit said in a BCCI video.

“The most pleasing thing from this series for me is that playing around 200-250 balls in every Test match – the first goal was to play more balls, stay more time in the middle and it’s the biggest takeaway for me in this series,” he added.

It’s a pity that rather than celebrating the batting masterclass of two of the best batters of the current generation, some people are more interested in spreading rumours about a rift between them.
