Hyderabad: Green India Challenge (GIC) is taking up yet another innovative programme to plant the ‘State Tree’ Jammi Chettu (Prosopis Cineraria) saplings in each and every temple and village across the State. This initiative will be launched formally as part of Dasara festivities.

Forest and Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy along with GIC founder MP J Santosh Kumar and Government Advisor Ramana Chary released a poster here on Thursday in this regard.

Considering its religious significance and environmental importance, Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao soon after State formation announced that Jammi Chettu would be the ‘State Tree.’ As part of Haritha Haram, saplings of this tree are being nurtured in many nurseries across the State. This tree has a lot of historical, cultural and social significance in the country and is worshipped in many States for its innumerable medicinal and therapeutic properties. However, there is a considerable decline in the number of these trees.

In Telangana, it is a tradition to perform pujas to Jammi Chettu and offer the tree leaves to friends and relatives as to usher prosperity and wellbeing as part of Dasara festivities.

GIC founder J Santosh Kumar said the initiative will be taken up under the slogan of “Uru Uriko Jammi Chettu- Gudi Gudiko Jammi Chettu” during Dasara Navaratri festivities. Already, 20, 000 saplings have been arranged for distribution in temples and villages across the State, said Santosh Kumar.

Forest Minister A Indrakaran Reddy said like other initiatives of GIC, the new initiative of planting Jammi Chettu would also be extended all support, besides promoting the initiative across the State.

Government Advisor Ramana Chary welcomed the move to plant Jammi Chettu saplings in all temples and villages. He said all support will be extended in ensuring the growth and survival of the saplings.
