Indian is named first female post-master

SACRAMENTO, CA — Jagdeep Grewal was sworn in the north steps of the state Capitol as Sacramento’s first woman postmaster, according to the US Postal Service.

The Indian American will oversee 1,004 employees who process and deliver mail on 537 city routes and 94 rural routes and fill nearly 20,000 post-office boxes.
Grewal, 57, began her career with the US Postal Service as a window clerk in 1988. She became a manager five years later and worked her way up the ranks, including a stint as postmaster in Pacifica-Daly City.
Grewal received her bachelor’s degree in education and her master’s degree in language arts from Punjab University in India.
The cash-strapped agency recently reported a net loss of $586 million this spring. The Postal Service has been battling a decline in mail volume due to consumer reliance on the Internet and private company package delivery.
Grewal said she looked forward to working with Sacramento’s Postal Service employees during a challenging time.

“It is only through joint effort and collaboration that we can truly meet our mission of providing extraordinary service while keeping costs down,” said Grewal in a news release.
