London, August 16

India beat England by 151 runs to win the second Test and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series at Lord’s here today. Chasing 272, England were bowled out for 120 in 51.5 overs with skipper Joe Root top-scoring with 33.

India had 60 overs to bowl out England and they completed the task in the last hour of play. India removed the last three wickets in seven balls after Jos Buttler (25 off 96 balls) and Ollie Robinson (9 off 35 balls) had defied the Indian bowlers for over an hour and 12.3 overs to raise hopes of a draw.

Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah put on an unbeaten partnership of 89 for the ninth wicket. AP/PTI

Mohammed Siraj took the final two wickets to end up with 4/32 and a match haul of eight wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah took 3/33.

Early wickets

India had put up a terrific display of new-ball bowling to leave England tottering at 67/4 at tea. Bumrah removed Rory Burns for a duck in the first over before Mohammed Shami produced an unplayable out-swinger to get the better of fellow opener Dom Sibley, also for 0.

Haseeb Hameed tried to steady the ship along with skipper Joe Root but was trapped LBW by Ishant Sharma for 9. Ishant also accounted for Jonny Bairstow on the last ball before tea with a sharp in-swinger, getting an LBW decision after India successfully reviewed. It was 67/4 now and the fifth wicket, that of Root, fell on the same score early in the third session when Bumrah got the England captain to edge one to Virat Kohli at first.

Tail wags

India had declared on 298/8 after Shami and Bumrah put on an unbeaten partnership of 89 for the ninth wicket. Resuming on 181/6, India lost Rishabh Pant (22) and Ishant (16) early, both falling to Ollie Robinson before Shami (56 not out) and Bumrah (34 not out) took charge and thwarted the England attack with some gutsy strokeplay. Root tried all his bowlers but was unsuccessful in removing the two tailenders. — Agencies

Super proud

Super proud of the whole team, the way we stuck to our plans. Pitch didn’t offer much on first three days. But the way we played in the second innings, under pressure, from Jasprit and Shami was outstanding. —Virat Kohli, India captain

We couldn’t see out the day which was frustrating but a lot of cricket to play and we’ll come back hard. We’ve found ourselves in this position before and come out on top. Be patient, learn the lessons and be better next time. Joe Root, England captain

Really happy that hundred could set up a victory for India. We’ve been here for couple of months, working on our skills. Really happy with the performance. KL Rahul, Player of the match
