Hyderabad: Home baker gains popularity with her attractive cake designs

BUY-SELL | HELP WANTED | MATRIMONIAL

Hyderabad: There are many positive stories that we have witnessed in the pandemic and one such story is of Veena Nair.

The Sainikpuri-based home baker donned the baker’s hat only to experiment in her free time, but her passion soon transformed into a successful small business.

From working nights shifts as a Risk Investigator at a leading MNC and running What The Cake (WTC) during the day to being a full-time mommy to a little one named Nived, Veena is one of the busiest people in the lockdown. So, how did it all start for her?

“I learnt the basics of baking from my mother during my schooling days. We would bake sponge cakes and my friends would love it! Baking took a backseat as I got busy with my life. However, I would watch these cake art videos online and I was fascinated. I happened to bake a cake in the lockdown for a friend in my neighbourhood and everyone loved it. So, I decided to start experimenting with my passion and that’s how ‘What The Cake’ was born last October,” shares the 30-year-old.

It has been eight months now, and whoever has bought a cake from Veena has never gone back to a bakery. The quality, hygiene and customisation that home bakers offer can’t be matched by local bakeries. Veena’s USP is her attractive cake designs that she learns through Instagram, YouTube and her own experimentation.

“Each cake has its own emotion – I don’t stop until I make sure the experience is perfect for the customer. I will gladly take an order even at 2 am because that’s how passionate I am. I make cakes, brownies, donuts and cupcakes. Soon, I will be launching macaroons and Korean lunchbox cakes. One of the things that my customers love is that I bake small tier cakes. While bakeries usually offer only 3 kg plus tier cakes, I make 1 and 1/2 kg tier cakes as well for birthdays, weddings etc.,” she shares.

Veena hopes to open a cake shop in the city someday. “My husband has been my biggest support through it all. He takes care of our kid and pushes me to pursue my passion,” says Veena, whose business is also FSSAI registered.

What The Cake (Ph 7977523814 or instagram.com/whatthecake_WTC) offers basic cakes such as Butterscotch and White Forest at Rs 700 per kg and Red Velvet and Chocolate Truffle cakes at Rs 1000 per kg. The prices for egg and eggless options are the same.
