WESTWOOD, CA — The identity of the gunman in a June 1 murder-suicide at the Westwood, Calif.-based campus of the University of California-Los Angeles has been revealed to be an Indian American graduate of Stanford University, Mainak Sarkar.

Sarkar, 38, drove from his home in Minnesota with a pair of guns and multiple rounds of ammunition to Los Angeles and killed UCLA engineering professor William Klug, 39, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life

According to Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, Sarkar had driven from St. Paul to Los Angeles some time within the past few days. The guns were legally purchased and at least one was registered to him.

He then went to the UCLA campus, marched into Klug’s fourth floor office, and fired multiple rounds at his former professor before killing himself, Beck said.

Authorities who searched his Minnesota home found a “kill list” with the names of Klug, another UCLA professor who taught Sarkar while he was at the college, and a woman.

The woman on the list was later found at her home in a nearby Minnesota town shot dead. The other professor on the list was unharmed, he added.

Sarkar, who has no apparent criminal record, used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol to kill Klug and himself inside an office on the campus.

Nearly three months ago, on March 10, Sarkar called the professor a “very sick person” who should not be trusted.

After reports of gunfire heard around 10 am, the 419-acre campus was placed on lockdown for two hours.

Sarkar, a former doctoral student, had accused Klug of stealing his computer code and giving it to someone else.
