WASHINGTON, DC -The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has temporarily suspended a migrant entry program that allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) to bypass standard immigration protocols and fly directly into the United States. This decision follows an internal audit that uncovered numerous fraudulent applications, including the use of deceased sponsors’ Social Security numbers and fake addresses.

A DHS spokesperson stated, “Out of an abundance of caution, DHS has temporarily paused the issuance of advanced travel authorizations for new beneficiaries while it undertakes a review of supporter applications. DHS will restart application processing as quickly as possible, with appropriate safeguards.”

The CHNV program, which began in January 2023, has admitted over 494,000 migrants from these four countries, with an average of 30,000 entries per month. The program has faced criticism for allegedly bypassing the legal immigration process by granting mass parole to migrants rather than admitting them on a discretionary basis.

Immigration policy and border security remain critical issues as the upcoming presidential election approaches.
