HI INIDA NEWS DESK
STERLING, VA -U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport seized $56,400 from an Iraq-bound man and his mother on December 7, 2023. The seizure occurred during outbound inspections for a flight to Doha, Qatar, when the CBP currency detector dog Fuzz alerted to the man’s carry-on baggage. Despite reporting only $30,000 initially, a subsequent inspection revealed an additional $42,000 on their persons and in carry-on bags, with $14,400 found in the man’s checked baggage. In total, CBP seized $56,400 and allowed the family to continue their trip.

Earlier the same day, CBP officers seized $68,000 from a Nigeria-bound family who falsely reported possessing only $10,000. CBP emphasizes the importance of truthfully reporting all currency to avoid consequences such as flight delays, currency seizure, and potential criminal prosecution. Unreported currency may be linked to illegal activities, and travelers are encouraged to complete the FINCEN 105 form before CBP inspections. In 2022, CBP officers seized an average of approximately $217,700 in unreported or illicit currency daily along the nation’s borders. CBP’s border security mission involves screening travelers and cargo for various illicit items to protect public safety, U.S. businesses, and the nation’s economic vitality.
