NEW YORK, NY- Diwali is set to become a public school holiday in New York City from next year. The Indian festival of lights is celebrated by a vast number of Indian communities in the US.

The announcement was made by New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a press conference. He said, “This is an educational moment because when we acknowledge Diwali, we are going to encourage children to learn about Diwali.”

Assembly member Jenifer Rajkumar who introduced legislation to recognize Diwali, said, ““The time has come to recognise over 200,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights.”

Today, South Asian and Indo-Caribbean families like mine all over this city have made incredible contributions. And today, I’m proud to say, our time has come,” she added.
