WASHINGTON, DC -The Senate’s proposed border deal and foreign aid package would bring significant changes to US immigration law, marking a departure from long-standing practices.
The bill includes measures such as granting emergency authority to restrict border crossings based on migrant encounter thresholds, raising the asylum application standard, expediting processing times to six months, and introducing a new asylum decision process by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Additionally, the bill preserves the president’s authority for humanitarian parole and authorizes 250,000 additional immigrant visas over five years.
The legislation faces uncertain prospects, with some House members declaring it “dead on arrival.” Even if passed, immediate implementation would be challenging due to resource requirements, including the hiring of additional personnel.
