Cook County Issues Emergency Proclamation Following Severe July Weather

Hundreds of residents impacted by severe weather event as emergency management personnel pursue resources to support residents and municipalities.

CHICAGO, IL- Hundreds of residents have been affected by a severe weather event, prompting emergency management efforts to secure resources for those impacted. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle issued a disaster proclamation for areas within Cook County following storms on July 14 and 15. These storms produced three confirmed tornadoes on July 14 and 13 on July 15, causing extensive damage to both public and private infrastructure. The hardest-hit areas include Broadview, Chicago, Dolton, Flossmoor, Harvey, and Robbins.

The proclamation aims to secure resources to aid communities and residents in their recovery. The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS) is collaborating with state and federal agencies to conduct a preliminary damage assessment in the affected communities. President Preckwinkle emphasized the county’s commitment to coordinating recovery efforts and seeking all available assistance.

EMRS activated the County’s Emergency Operations Center on July 15, deploying mobile command vehicles, generators, and other resources to assist with food, shelter, and debris management. The county has received extensive reports of damage, with estimated public infrastructure and response costs exceeding $5 million, underscoring the storm’s significant impact on the region.
