City Of Chicago Takes Urgent Measures to Tackle Severe Air Pollution Caused by Canadian Wildfire Smoke

CHICAGO, IL – Air quality conditions in Chicago remained “very unhealthy” for the second consecutive day due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued an updated Air Quality Alert, predicting “unhealthy” conditions statewide and “unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups” for the following day. The City of Chicago urged all residents, especially vulnerable populations, to take precautions and avoid outdoor activities. Measures were taken to protect vulnerable individuals, including moving public activities indoors and providing alternative locations such as public libraries and community centers.
The City also implemented various actions to minimize the impact, such as alerting relevant agencies and providing personal protective equipment. Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the need for vigilance and stated the importance of addressing the climate crisis and its impact on vulnerable communities. Mayor Johnson urged cooperation in disseminating critical information and advised individuals to follow safety precautions, including wearing masks, staying indoors, and seeking medical attention if necessary.
