Every now and then our politicians will make a statement that will leave us scratching our heads, perplexed, and react in a manner that can be best described as this –

From Piyush Goyal’s Einstein and Gravity remark to a whole bunch of other such statements by different politicians, our leaders have often provided us with Grade A, meme worthy moments that have literally broken the internet, a thousand times over.

Well, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s latest statements at an election event in Lucknow gave us yet another instance when a political leader jumbled up their words, and gave us something really hilarious.

While addressing a gathering of political workers and volunteers, CM Adityanath started speaking on how history has been distorted, and went on to say, “How is history distorted! History didn’t call Chandragupta Maurya great, whom did it call great? The one who lost from him. They call Alexander the great. The nation has been cheated.”

Because, if the truth comes out before Indians, the society will stand up once again. When society stands up, the nation stands up too. PM Modi is making this nation stand up today. When we talk of ‘ek Bharat, shreshth Bharat’, these issues are spoken on: UP CM Yogi Adityanath pic.twitter.com/5pC3Uja4DN

Now, there’s a fair chance that he meant Porus, the king who actually fought and was said to have lost to Alexander of Babylon. However, the fact that he went for Chandragupta Maurya, instead of Porus, was meme-worthy.

Avid followers of History will know that Alexander died in 323 BC, and that Chandragupta Maurya fought and won against a Greek general in 303 BC, almost 20 years after Alexander had died. In fact, when Alexander invaded India in 327 BC, the great Chandragupta Maurya, was still a toddler, and would be crowned as a king 3 years after the invasion.

Well, people took to Twitter soon enough and jumped on the moment to have a laugh at the minister’s expense.

This tweet says, “Baba first renamed Porus, and then asked Alexander to fight and lose to him, so that I can give a speech.”

बाबा ने पहले Porus का नाम बदल कर चंद्रगुप्त रखा। फिर अलेक्षाँडर को बोला लड़ो, हारो फिर में भाषण दूँगा। #Shitstory

Alexander? Chandragupta had a conflict with Seleucus Nicator which was settled with what you would call an inter-faith marriage.

Being a political leader is tough for sure. Who knew that people would go through each and every word of what you say with such a fine-toothed comb?
