Bolivia to send attorneys to Paraguay and US over FIFA scandal

La Paz, Dec 5: Bolivia's Public Prosecutor's Office has announced it will send a group of attorneys to the United States and Paraguay in the coming days to gather information about the two high-ranking Bolivian football officials accused in the FIFA corruption scandal.

General attorney Ramiro Guerrero said on Friday that next week a group of attorneys would meet in Asuncion (Paraguay) with officials from the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) to "find out the results of the audit under Carlos Chavez's management," reports Xinhua.

Chavez is the former president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) and Conmebol treasurer. He has been in prison since July while being investigated on corruption charges.

Another group of Bolivian attorneys will head to the US to learn in detail about the accusations the country holds against Chavez and his predecessor in the FBF and Conmebol, Bolivian Romer Osuna, according to Guerrero.

Osuna has been called into the investigations due to his alleged negligence within world football's governin body FIFA.

Chavez and Osuna make up part of the US justice system's "black" list of officials accused of corruption. Another 14 current and former high-ranking Latin American soccer executives were accused on Thursday by US general attorney Loretta Lynch.

Chavez, who is being held prisoner in Palmasola jail since July 21 is accused in Bolivia of legitimising illegal earnings, influence-peddling, tax crimes and fraud, among other charges.

Osuna is still free in Bolivia. Thursday was the first time his name appeared on a list of corruption suspects. He was Conmebol's treasurer for 27 years.
