Aprilia Updates Its SR Scooter Range

Aprilia has given its SR scooter range a much-needed mid-cycle refresh. The updates for the 2021 models include a revised front fascia, an all-digital cluster, and new stickers. Prices start at Rs. 1,17,494 for the SR 160 and Rs. 1,07,595 for the SR 125. Both prices are ex-showroom, Pune.

The SR 160 now gets three variants in the form of the standard SR 160, the SR 160 Race and the SR 160 Carbon. The SR 160 Race comes in at Rs. 1,26,636, while the Carbon variant is priced at Rs. 1,19,975. Interestingly, all the variants undercut the Yamaha Aerox 155—the SR 160’s only rival in the market. The extra moolah for the Race variant gets you MotoGP-inspired graphics and knuckle guards, while the Carbon comes with a matte paint scheme and pinstriped alloys.

The most noticeable update for 2021 is the redesigned fascia. It no longer houses halogen headlights, and in its place is a new LED unit with LED position lights. This should address some of the issues around poor illumination from the headlights on the outgoing model. The LED treatment continues to the back with a distinctive X-shaped tail-lamp signature. At the rear are broader and bigger grab handles along with new split seats. 

A fully digital LCD instrument cluster, first seen on SXR 160, does duty on the SR 160 and SR 125. The display gets readouts for trip, speed and fuel consumption data, along with a tachometer.

Mechanically, everything stays the same though, and making no increase to the performance figures seems like a missed opportunity, especially in the face of growing competition. Don’t get us wrong, the SRs have pretty good numbers (11PS and 11.6Nm for the SR 160, and 9.9PS and 9.7Nm for the SR 125), but the TVS NTorq 125 Race XP and the Yamaha Aerox 155 now happen to have better numbers on paper. The cycle parts remain the same too, with conventional telescopic forks, monoshocks, disc/drum braking setups, 14-inch alloys, and ABS/CBS units from the outgoing models.
