Thulasendrapuram – a small village with just a population of 300 people in Tiruvarur district close to Chennai in India is celebrating a special US connection these days. The people of this village have put out big banners depicting US Vice President Kamala Harris. The village is the ancestral village of Harris where both her grandparents were born.

Interestingly, most of the villagers hadn’t heard of Kamala Harris before she became the Vice President of the United States in 2021. But now, the villagers are vying for her win and hoping that she becomes the next President of the United States.

A billboard with the face of Harris currently adorns the village square saying daughter of the land in the native language. While Harris’ grandparents belong to the village, her mother, Shyamala Gopalan was born and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her mother came to the US, at 19 to study at the University of Berkeley, California. Her dad, a Jamaican, met her mom while in college.

Even though Harris was born and brought up in the US, she visited India often and has said on record that India remains a vital part of her life.

Harris also visited India after her mothers’ dad and scattered her ashes in Chennai where her mother grew up.
