Justice Department Releases Final Rule Enhancing Web and Mobile App Accessibility for People with Disabilities

HI INDIA NEWS DESK
WASHINGTON, DC- Attorney General Merrick B. Garland has signed a final rule under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), emphasizing the accessibility of web content and mobile applications (apps) for people with disabilities. This rule clarifies the obligations of state and local governments to ensure the accessibility of their websites and apps. The significance of this action lies in the daily dependence of individuals on digital platforms for accessing public services such as emergency information, healthcare, and voting details. Without accessibility, people with disabilities face exclusion from these essential services, contrary to the ADA’s promise of equal participation.

Attorney General Garland emphasized the Department of Justice’s commitment to accessibility, recognizing the collaborative efforts that have led to this rule. Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer echoed this sentiment, stressing the rule’s importance in ensuring equal participation in society for people with disabilities. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke highlighted the historical significance of the rule, emphasizing its role in dismantling barriers to full participation in American life. This rule sets technical standards for state and local governments, providing clarity on accessibility requirements, and fostering a more inclusive society.
