Young Woman Falls to Her Death While Attempting to Cross International Border Fence

SAN DIEGO, CA- A woman died after falling from the U.S.—Mexico border near the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Thursday night, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
On March 21, 2024, around 10:27 p.m., the U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Communications Center alerted via service radio that several individuals were nearing the secondary International Border Fence, approximately 2.7 miles west of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, carrying a ladder. The secondary fence, about 30 feet tall with vertical metal bollards, featured an electrical conduit atop its north side, facilitating an electric gate nearby.

CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) compiled information from radio transmissions, surveillance footage, and interviews. Around 10:30 p.m., a Border Patrol agent intervened as a woman attempted to climb down the north side of the fence, getting stuck. Despite efforts, she fell at approximately 10:54 p.m., suffering severe injuries. Emergency services arrived promptly, but she was declared deceased by a physician around 11:17 p.m. The victim, a 24-year-old Guatemalan citizen, prompted investigations by local authorities and CBP’s OPR. The incident, partially recorded on body cameras, will have footage released per protocol. This notification complies with CBP’s policy on reporting deaths involving its operations and DHS reporting requirements.
