Vintage Rolex Belonging to Sir Michael Caine Is Up For Auction

Bonhams, one of the world’s largest and most renowned auctioneers, has set aside a selection of Sir Michael Caine’s treasured possessions as part of the “Sir Michael Caine: The Personal Collection” auction scheduled. Bonhams Director of House Sales and Iconic Collections, Charlie Thomas, said: “Sir Michael Caine is a cinema legend internationally and a national treasure here in the UK. I know the Sir Michael Caine Collection Sale will excite great interest among collectors and film fans alike.”

Among the wonderful selection of items that reflect the length and sole of Sir Michael’s career is a single 18K gold Rolex Oysterquartz Day-Date (Ref: 19018) from the 1980s (estimate £8,000-12,000). The actor has been spotted wearing this particular watch in real and reel life.

The Rolex Oysterquartz collection was first released in 1977, right around the quartz crisis. As the watch market was flooded with large quantities of quartz watches from Japanese watchmakers, Rolex put forward the new Oysterquartz as a deterrent. The watch’s design was very different from the classic Rolex line and included features like an utterly angular case, an integrated bracelet, and sapphire glass. Since Rolex stopped the production of its Oysterquartz collection in 2003, these rare timepieces have been offered in auction garnering good value and collector’s interest.

Apart from the vintage Rolex watch, the auction contains several items from Sir Michael Caine’s career and life. It includes movie posters, furniture including his desk, works of art and fine art, such as Les Amoureux dans l’arbre by Marc Chagall (estimate £30,000-50,00) – and his iconic spectacles (estimate: £800-1200). “It’s going to be quite a wrench to part with so many treasured parts of my life and career, but it’s the right time to be moving on. I hope these mementoes will give their new owners as much pleasure as they have given us,” said Sir Michael Caine.
