BERKELEY, CA — Apoorve Agarwal, a 20-year-old Indian American junior at the University of California at Berkeley, died on December 20, seemingly as a result of a fall down some stairs at his residence in Berkeley, Calif.

The Berkeley police said officers found his body just after 4 am in the 2500 block of Piedmont Avenue between Dwight Way and Parker Street.

“At this time, it does not appear foul play was involved and alcohol may have been a factor,” the police said. The Alameda County coroner’s office identified the man as Agarwal.

According to scanner audio recordings reviewed by the Berkeleyside journal, first responders found an unresponsive man who had apparently fallen down the stairs at his residence.

Agarwal graduated from Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, Calif., in 2012, and had a double major in applied mathematics and economics at U.C.-Berkeley.

He interned at Advance Micro Devices and Northwestern Mutual and had always had an inclination towards the field of law, particularly international and business law.

Agarwal completed a one-month externship at Merrill Lynch in San Jose in 2013, and was marketing intern at Krypton Consulting in Newark for five months in 2011.

In November, the Berkeley police had responded to an incident about four blocks from Agarwal’s residence, when residents found another 20-year-old Indian American, Vaibhev Loomba, a student at U.C.-Davis, dead after a large party.
