CHICAGO, IL — The Sikh Student Association at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) partnered with the Sikh Resource Society to host a turban-tying event on the UIC campus.
Students, faculty, staff, the university administration and the university police were present. Participants observed or had turbans tied, asked questions about Sikhism, and experienced a vital part of the Sikh identity.
While some participants wore their turbans during the entire function while the demonstration was going on, some took them home to practice.
The Sikh community was represented by Amardev Singh Badesha, whose two sons went to UIC and were active in the Sikh Student Association there. Badesha is also a Board member of the Sikh Religious Society, Chicago and the principal, Sunday School in Palatine Gurdwara Sahib. Thakar Singh Basati also helped the students in conducting the event.
The event precedes the Sikh Student Association’s “Langar on Campus” to be held at UIC on April 10, which will be followed by distribution of food to the homeless population of Chicago
