The perfect party season fabric

Velvet is synonymous with luxe fashion. And what better time to dress up in this rich, classic fabric than the winter festive season. Since the velvet as a fabric has the ability to add instant luxury and glamour to any outfit, it makes for an ideal party wear.

Since the fabric is thick and keeps the chill at bay, it serves as a sensible choice to wear during the ongoing Christmas holiday events and for other festive parties or cocktails.

But if you thought that velvet outfits can look bulky check out how many designers showcased looks using velvet in a more contemporary manner, that flatters the body. While velvet was a hit on international ramps, Indian designers too showcased some interesting versions.

Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee showcased saris where velvet was used sparingly only to create the pallu to give a clean yet regal feel to the garment. Designer Anand Bhushan says, "Velvet has made a comeback. From sophisticated to grunge, velvet has been used in every possible way, making it a hot trend this season." There are, however, ways to wear this fabric in a right manner.

"Velvet is a tricky material and works well when used minimally. It should be worn separately or teamed up with some other fabric. You can wear a velvet jacket with a dress." says designer Rimzim Dadu. So, whether you wear it like a mini dress or in a floor-length gown, the key is to wear velvet in a simple cut and in rich jewel tones. If you feel a bit overwhelmed to wear it, introduce it in your outfit in form of an accessory, like a hand bag, head band, belt or even shoes.

Designer Rajesh Pratap Singh gave a modern touch to velvet where he paired floor length velvet jackets in rich tones like blue and purple, over fuss free dresses and cotton trousers. "Velvet works well with simple silhouettes. The fabric lends a theatrical element to the garment without any embellishments," adds Singh.

Wearing velvet the right way Try not to match velvet items head to toe. Anand Bhushan suggests trying velvet in applique form which is the minimal way to try the trend.

Take cue from menswear silhouettes. Rajesh Pratap suggests pairing a velvet waistcoat with denim jeans.

Try the grunge look taking inspiration from the 90s. A long velvet skirt with a cotton top will give you a cool and casual. Give a modern spin to Indian traditional wear by using velvet sparcely. Rajesh Pratap suggests a long velvet overcoat juxtaposed with a sari.
