Taliban should not foster terrorism on Afghan soil, India tells United Nations

India on Thursday told the United Nations that the Taliban should adhere to its commitments and not use the Afghan soil to foster terrorism, PTI reported.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti was speaking at the United Nations Security Council Debate on Afghanistan.

In August, India had taken over the rotating presidency of the security council for a month with an aim to discuss counter-terrorism and peacekeeping issues on priority.

The UN Security Council met thrice under India’s presidency, during which the Resolution 2593 was passed. The resolution underlined a host of critical and immediate issues that need attention in Afghanistan.

Tirumurti on Thursday said that India was honoured to preside over the “adoption of a substantial and forward-looking product [the resolution]” during its presidency of the Security Council.

The resolution expects that the Taliban would not train, finance or shelter the terror groups or individuals listed under Resolution 1267.

The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, pointed out that of the 33 names presented by the Taliban in its interim government, many are on the world body’s sanctions list.

Those on the sanctions list includes the prime minister, the two deputy prime ministers, and the foreign minister.
