Paris, April 13  World No. 8 David Ferrer announced on Twitter his withdrawal from the Monte Carlo Masters due to a calf injury on Tuesday, a day prior to his opening match against Germany's Alexander Zverev in the second round.

The Spaniard added that he would keep everyone informed about his potential return to the ATP Tour, Xinhua reported.

Lucky loser Marcel Granollers will replace Ferrer in the main draw.

Ferrer, a finalist in the Principality tournament in 2011 against Rafael Nadal, has also reached the semifinals here twice, respectively in 2010 and 2014.

His best result so far this season has been reaching the semifinals of the Auckland Open and the Argentina Open, where he lost respectively to American Jack Sock and to countryman Nicolas Almagro.

Ferrer also reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open before being ousted by Andy Murray, and the Rio Open where he lost to Pablo Cuevas.

He suffered an opening round defeat in Doha, where he was the defending champion to Illya Marchenko, and made a second-round exit in Acapulco, where he was the defending champion again.

His bad run of form extended to Indian Wells and Miami as well, where he failed to reach the second week and lost to Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the third round.
