Sonam Kapoor’s Salary Demand For ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ Left Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Stunned

BUY-SELL | HELP WANTED | MATRIMONIAL

Bollywood. The land of glitz and glamour. A fantasy for most Indians, who dream of making it big on the silver screen.

With fame comes the obvious moolah. And with Bollywood actors commanding exorbitant figures per project, who wouldn’t want to dare to dream that high?

Lately, there’s been a surge in conversations around pay disparity among male and female actors in Bollywood.

Recently, a report stated that Ranveer Singh had charged somewhere around Rs 50 crores for Baiju Bawra, helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, while his wife Deepika Padukone walked out of the project after demanding the same pay as her husband, which apparently did not work out.

Amidst all this, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s soon to be launched autobiography, The Stranger In The Mirror gives us a glimpse of his journey as one of India’s most prominent filmmakers.

A journey as fabled as his, obviously, comes with interesting tidbits, one of them involving a certain Sonam Kapoor and her contribution to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

He revealed that Sonam Kapoor charged a measly Rs 11 for her role in the biopic based on Milkha Singh’s life.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was effusive in his admiration for the actress, “Sonam understood that the film was not a love story – it was about a Partition survivor’s tryst with his horrific childhood, and that Isri Kaur, the sister, was his only connection to a past that he was reluctant to both own and discard.”

Rakesh and Sonam share an equation that goes back to 2006, when they worked together on Delhi-6.

They enjoyed each other’s work so much that the legendary filmmaker  wanted to enlist her talents for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013, albeit for a brief appearance.

“Sonam Kapoor benevolently accepted to play a guest appearance for a princely sum of Rs 11 only for her brief portrayal of Biro,” recalls the veteran filmmaker in his autobiography.

He didn’t shy away from praising Sonam Kapoor’s humility, as he elucidates further, “She chose to accept Rs 11. She had a special appearance in the film. Both of us shared an amazing journey with Delhi-6 before that. She told me that she needed just 7 days for the shoot and she praised us for trying to say something so beautiful, about the partition of this country and the spirit of Milkha Singh. So, she wanted to contribute to the film as well. It was very nice of her.”

Even though Sonam Kapoor comes from immense wealth and privilege, it’s uncommon to hear of stars charging such humble figures all because of their dedication to a project.

This act of sincerity and humility will always be remembered fondly as part of her legacy in Bollywood.
