Saratoga Declares State of Emergency as Latest Storm Hits The Area
City incurred an estimated $200,000 in damages

SARATOGA, CA- The Bay Area has been hit by a series of intense storms in recent weeks, causing widespread damage and putting lives at risk. The latest storm saw hurricane-speed winds in Saratoga, which resulted in downed trees and branches blocking streets, power lines being knocked down, and damage to properties. The city declared a state of emergency to make it easier for them to receive emergency supplies and resources, or request financial assistance.
The damage from the two most recent storms is estimated to be around $200,000, with the majority of the costs coming from the removal of fallen trees. The continuous storms have weakened soil stability, making it easier for trees to fall, and has resulted in the loss of several lives. Arborists are working to remove fallen trees and limbs from properties across the Bay Area, including a very large tree next to the stage at Wildwood Park that is leaning and needs to be removed at a cost of $50,000.
Mayor Kookie Fitzsimmons has asked staff to consider waiving fees or permits for removing eucalyptus trees that pose a threat to public safety. The city has already reported $350,000 worth of storm damages and has allocated $450,000 for emergency relief. The next council meeting on April 5 will discuss options for temporary fee or permit waivers.
