Puducherry [India], Feb 12 (ANI): The Puducherry legislative assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), making it the sixth assembly to adopt the anti-CAA resolution after Kerala, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
“Resolution urging the Centre to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act passed in Puducherry Legislative Assembly,” Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said.
The resolution was passed in the special session of the Assembly despite three BJP MLAs walking out as a mark of protest. The MLAs of AIADMK and All India NR Congress had boycotted the proceedings of the House and did not come to the Assembly.
The special session of the 30-member Puducherry Assembly had been called by Assembly Secretary Vincent Rayar for a resolution against the CAA.
On February 10, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi had written a letter Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy stating that the CAA, passed by the Parliament and assented by President, is applicable to Puducherry as well and it cannot be questioned or deliberated in any manner.
Meanwhile, Puducherry (Bakur area) and Karaikal district as a protected zoning zone and resolution 2 of the report of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change were unanimously passed by the Assembly. (ANI)
