When I was in 8th standard I cooked a dish for the first time on my own. A very good friend of mine used to bring a kurma-type potato dish and chapati for lunch. I loved the taste and asked her mom for the recipe and tried it at home. Those days, we don’t eat much onion/garlic at home. So when amma was not at home, I cooked the dish with some assistance from my paati | grandmother.

This potato paal kootu is the first dish I cooked on my own. My paati loved it and it tasted closer to the one, which my friend used to bring. That’s how I got more interest in cooking.

This is a popular recipe in South Indian Tamil weddings. They usually serve as an accompaniment for biryani or as a side for poori in the reception.

Moving on to the recipe, we are using potato and little peas as the key vegetable in this recipe. Though the name indicates paal kootu, we are not adding milk in this recipe. As the color is white in color we are naming it paal kootu.
