Kolkata, Feb 2: Apprised about various issues faced by West Bengal, like rising cases of crime against women, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday assured action including sending an NCW team to probe reported cases, the state Congress Sunday said.

A team of Congress leaders, led by state chief Pradip Bhattacharya, met Manmohan Singh who was in the city to participate in the bicentenary celebrations of the Indian Museum here.

"We appraised him (Manmohan Singh) about the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, including repeated instances of attacks on women. We also told him about how the state government has either remained a mute spectator or preferred to play to the galleries," Bhattacharya told media after the meeting at Raj Bhavan.

Bhattacharya said the prime minister has assured them of sending a National Commission for Women (NCW) team to West Bengal to probe the various cases of atrocities and crime against women.

"We informed him how the state government has refused to send reports which have been sought by the NCW. The prime minister has assured us of sending a NCW team," said Bhattacharya.

"He said he will also try sending a central team to investigate all such matters," he said.
