SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Known in the Silicon Valley as a technology wizard, Umang Gupta passed away in his San Francisco Bay Area home in San Mateo on April 19.
The first Indian to take a software company to NASDAQ back in 1993, Gupta was a pioneer in the tech revolution. His company, Gupta Technologies, was the first amongst the ideas that led to the Silicon Valley boom of tech companies led by Indian American CEOs.
He was a forerunner amongst pioneering gurus who founded software companies in California’s Silicon Valley in the 1980s and 1990s.
A 1971 IIT Kanpur graduate, he formed the IIT Kanpur Alumni Association. Born in Patiala in 1949, Umang Gupta grew up in India and studied chemical engineering at IIT Kanpur. He came to the US for his MBA at Kent State University, Ohio.
He was fighting bladder cancer for the last two years. He is survived by his wife Ruth and two kids.
